Tom MacWright is a software engineer, designer, and writer known for his foundational contributions to open-source geospatial tools, web architecture, and developer platforms. He currently works as an engineer at Val Town.

Throughout his career, he served as an early core engineer at Mapbox—where he created widely used open-source libraries including Turf.js, geojson.io, and simple-statistics—and later worked at Observable. He also founded and bootstrapped Placemark, an innovative web-based GIS and map editor that he subsequently released as an open-source project.
