Escaping Flatland meetups summer 2026: times and places

There has been a flurry of activity in the chat over the last two months, and we now have meetups arranged in 47 cities in 22 countries! A big thank you to everyone who has stepped forward to organize in their cities.

If you’re reading this, you’re invited. You are welcome even if you have just started reading the blog, if you think you might not fit in, and if you have never been to a meetup before. This is the first time we’re doing this, so everyone will be new to it. The people who went to the first two meetups, in Copenhagen and NYC, seem to have had a good time (and they are planning more meetups, see below).

In this post you can check if there is an event planned where you live. I’ve sorted the events in alphabetical order—

  1. Asia-Pacific (including Australia)

  2. Europe (including UK)

  3. North America

—and within each region I’ve alphabetized first by country/state, then by city.

There are events in these countries: Australia, Bulgaria, Canada, China, Denmark, France, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, Netherlands, Norway, Pakistan, Singapore, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, United Kingdom, United States, and Vietnam.

I’ll attend the London meetup on July 18.

The organizers have created a Luma event for each city, where you can sign up (RSVP) with one click. I very much appreciate it if people do this. The people who are hosting are taking a day out of their lives to do something fun for strangers, so it is nice if we let them know how many will show up. Also, if you can’t make it, remember to cancel :)

Additional information for meetup organizers:

  1. If you’re the host, make sure you are easy to spot, for example, by bringing a sign that says “ESCAPING FLATLAND MEETUP” or “EF MEETUP.”

  2. It can be useful to bring blank labels and pens for nametags.

  3. If you’re having trouble thinking of something to talk about, most people will have in common that they have read some posts on Escaping Flatland, so—hopefully you’ll have more exciting things to talk about—but you can always open by asking people about their favorite post and going from there.

  4. Since this is a first meetup, people are probably just going to want to talk, so there is no need to plan a lot of structured activities.

  5. At both meetups we’ve had so far, some of the attendees have felt like meeting up again. I highly recommend checking if that is the case and creating (for example) a WhatsApp group to coordinate future meetups and other things that might be fun to share or do together in your local community. (I will probably do a post like this once a year; if you want to meet more often, you’ll need your own chat or email list of some kind.)

  6. I’ve heard it’s easier to schedule a follow-up meetup while you’re having the first, compared to trying to do it later on by email.
